BE WELL: Immune Deficiency?

Strengthen weak immune system. Many want to know how to strengthen immune system. In a day’s time, you are either building up your immune system or totally break it down. Which are you doing? Foot pain – Muscle spasms

Give up high heeled shoes? There are four main reasons why patients with foot pain show up at Life Reset Chiropractic (see ‘Foot pain – Chiropractic‘). This is an expansion on the fourth reason causing foot pain, ‘Unbalanced & Spasmed Muscles’. Muscles in the legs become imbalanced and painful for multiple reasons. Have you ever experienced sore feet after wearing a new pair of shoes or starting a new activity? I remember working in a retail clothing store in Dallas, TX in the early 70’s. I worked with a young lady who wore nothing but high heeled shoes. I asked if she ever had foot pain or leg pain. She said “No.” “I actually have pain if I don’t have my high heels on.” I wasn’t a chiropractor at the time. I wasn’t even thinking about being a chiropractor.

So which do your think supports your health & well-being the most? High heeled shoes or flat heeled shoes?  ANSWER:  Flat heeled shoes

Pain not wearing high heeled shoes I remember this being very puzzling to me. I honestly didn’t believe her when she said that she didn’t have any foot pain symptoms or leg pain. Now I know why she felt better wearing her high heels. The muscles in her legs had compensated for the high heels. The calf muscles (hamstrings) had permanently shortened in the backs of her legs. She would actually experience foot pain and leg pain without her high heels due to the sudden constant pull and stretch on her shortened leg muscles. Ladies don’t panic. You can still wear your high heels. My suggestion is to save them for special occasions or an occasional wear rather than everyday.

Tips to avoid foot pain

  • Begin new activities gradually
  • Buy shoes that support your feet
  • Wear shoes that match your activity (i.e. – runners = running shoes)
  • Rehab your feet/ankles after injuries, accidents or post-surgery
  • High heel wearers – ‘Occasional’ is the keyword

Foot pain causes – Old injuries & scar tissue

Old injuries & scar tissue. There are four major reasons why foot pain symptoms show up at Life Reset Chiropractic in Loveland, CO (see all four major reasons ‘Foot pain – Chiropractic’). The third reason for foot pain is ‘Old Injuries & Scar Tissue’. Foot pain symptoms can begin after your have had foot injuries, ankle injuries, leg injuries or knee injuries.

Adhesions can cause pain. Adhesions or scar tissue builds up around old areas of injury in the foot and ankle resulting in foot pain symptoms, ankle pain and heel pain. The longer the foot pain is there your gait start to become abnormal. Next you can start experiencing knee pain, hip pain and low back pain. Adhesions or scar tissue (primarily made of collagen) is the best replacement the body has to offer once a muscle, ligament, tendon or skin has been damaged. The severity of an ankle sprain or strain can range from mild to severe. If the trauma and impact are forceful enough there can be a complete tear. Complete tears are managed with a primary care medical doctor who specializes in orthopedics.

Foot & ankle sports injuries. As chiropractors, we focus on foot and ankle sprains and strains that are not a surgical case. Microscopic tears to the muscle, ligament, tendon and/or skin happen at the time of a sports injuries, foot injuries and ankle injuries. Adhesions and scar tissue starts to form. It’s laid down rather haphazardly by the body. It even has a tendency to form in clumps and balls. An increased number of pain sensitive nerves are usually found around scar tissue. These nerves can be so sensitive that one can even predict a weather change when the barometric pressure shifts.

Foot pain and ankle pain is one way your body protects you. It senses that your foot and ankle are not operating normally. Pain keeps you from moving too far or too fast. Regular chiropractic adjusting to the joints increases the function of your past foot injuries and ankle injuries.

Excessive adhesions or scar tissue can also buildup around old fractures or surgical areas. Some scar tissue is more functional than other scar tissue. Chiropractic adjusting the joints of the foot and ankle clears out the scar tissue that stops normal joint movement. With chiropractic adjustments, you are able to maximize your foot and ankle function even after old injuries and scar tissue build-up.

Chiropractic – That’s voodoo

Active to horrible pain overnight. Imagine a young, vibrant college student in 1987. She was attending the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. She ran every week, hiked every weekend and biked her way to and from the college campus every day. She appeared to be the picture of health until one morning she woke up with severe pain. The pain was so debilitating that it took her to the floor. It was especially frightening that the pain CAME OUT OF NOWHERE. No recent injury or incident seemed to cause the pain. This young woman was Dr. Debbie Thompson.

At first I thought the pain would go away on its own, but it didn’t. Constant pain haunted me for 9 solid months. – Dr. Debbie Thompson

Nothing touched the pain. At that time she was studying pre-physical therapy at University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. She was doing volunteer work alongside 16 top physical therapists in the country. This rehab center was in the same town as the Olympic Training Center. One by one each physical therapist worked their magic on Dr. Debbie. She was massaged, electrically stimulated, iced, heated, pulled on, stretched and exercised. Nothing touched the pain. She struggled to get through college classes and study during the day. The rest of her time was spent nursing her pain. She lost her active life. Her relationships suffered. She was not happy, All she had was her pain.

Nine months into this excruciating chronic pain struggle, Dr. T attended a women’s health fair. She watched a chiropractor from afar…not trusting chiropractic or chiropractors.

I already knew everything there was to know about chiropractors and chiropractic. Chiropractic was like voodoo. Chiropractic was NOT SCIENTIFIC. Chiropractors were uneducated and they would hurt you. They definitely didn’t know what they were doing.  – Dr. Debbie Thompson

9 months of chronic pain. By now Dr. Debbie had been in pain for 9 months straight with no breaks. In this moment, desperation was stronger than everything she had known about chiropractors. She approached this female chiropractor. After all she did appear “quite normal”. After sharing a snapshot of her pain story, the chiropractor asked her to come into her office. “Let’s see what we can do.” Dr. Debbie felt like she had nothing to lose. She showed up at this chiropractor‘s office. Her first break from the severe chronic pain happened 7 days later.

Gradually she was able to start exercising again. Her first exercise was a gentle walk. “It felt so good to move again. I missed it so much,” she explains. Nine months later (a total of 18 months from the first day she had pain) she was pain-free. Thanks to chiropractic Dr. Debbie returned to her active lifestyle. There was a surprise bonus. The migraine headaches she had suffered from since age 12 disappeared never to return again!

24+ years helping chronic pain. Dr. Debbie knew there was going to be others in chronic severe pain like herself.  She wanted to be the one to make a difference for them. She switched her major from physical therapy to chiropractic. She graduated from Western States Chiropractic College (now University of Western Sates) in 1993
