Water is a major component of the human body. Water is used in EVERY chemical reaction in your body. In other words, you have trillions of cells in your body that are going through cellular chemical reactions all day long. Water is critical to complete those chemical reactions. Your body is composed of 65-85 percent water (depending on body size).
How much water? Drink 1/2 your current body weight in ounces to maintain good health. Example: 180 pound person = 90 ounces of water. Increase your water intake with working in the heat and increased physical activities.
Too much water? Here is a word of caution. If your body is not used to drinking water, start adding water slowly until you reach your adequate amount. Haven’t been drinking any water? Start with 8 ounces/day for 3 days. On day 4 add another 8 ounce glass of water. Keep adding slowly until you reach your body’s requirements.
The importance of water: My best answer for this question is based on the book, “Your Body’s Many Cries For Water” by F. Batmanghelidj MD. He found that dehydration was the primary cause of pain and dysfunction in the human body. His astounding basic breakthrough was made while he was confined to a Tehran prison, this being a unique circumstance in itself.
Water is a better medication than anything the drug industry has to offer. F. Batmanghelidj MD
During Dr. Batmanghelidj’s imprisonment with 3000 others, he was called upon multiple times to help someone in need of medical attention. He had no access to drugs or medications. Dr. Batmanghelidj did not have access to any other medical resources. Each time someone had a physical complaint the only thing he had to give them was water. Just some of the conditions he worked with were: body pains, back pain, muscle spasms, natural joint pain relief, migraine headaches, asthma, allergies, hypertension, excess body weight and emotional conditions like depression. He speaks about “back problems” and how important he now see water to re-hydrate the discs between each vertebrae of the body. The discs in the spine support 80% of your body weight and they consist of 80% water. Multiple back pains disappeared after administering water as treatment.
Medications are palliatives. They are not designed to cure the degenerative diseases of the human body. F. Batmanghelidj MD
So is water important for your Wellness Lifestyle? I’m sure you know the answer quite clearly now.
Can I drink coffee or tea instead of water? Dr. Andrew Weil’s short answer to this is “No”. The reason why is that coffees and teas act as diurectics. In other words they cause your body to excrete more water than normal.
“To get 2 cups of water from coffee or tea you have to to drink 3 cups of the coffee or tea. Dr. Andrew Weil
That create an unreasonable amount of coffees or teas by the end of your day. BEST CHOICE: Drink pure filtered unadulterated water to meet you water requirements.
What about flavored colored water? Flavored water has became a popular item on the market with increased water awareness/intake. Each of these companies have the right ideas. Here are the markets they are speaking to:
People who do not like water: The more pure unadulterated water you drink that more you will crave it. An easy fix is a squeeze of lime or lemon juice with a few drops of Stevia.
People who think that it’s cooler to have ‘Kool-Aid’ looking water: Okay, I can’t argue with you on this one. I like colors and fun things also. Be sure to check your fun colored water to make sure it’s in your best interest.
People who know most filtered water doesn’t work well in the body: When water is stripped of all minerals and nutrients it loses its capacity to cross the cell membrane effectively. You can drink this kind of water all day and still be dehydrated. All of your water will hangout around the cells, but not get into where the cellular functions need water. SOLUTION? Use Cell Power, drops a few grains of Celtic Sea Salt into your water or use mineral drops.
I like drinking water, but I was truly excited to hear about the new colored waters. When I started to do my personal research I was disappointed in what I found. Things to pay attention to when purchasing colored water:
- No artificial colors or dyes
- No artificial flavorings
- Check for heavy metals (i.e. blue lake = aluminum)
- Are you really getting/absorbing the vitamins? Questionable.
- Check calorie level
The way that vitaminwater is marketed and positioned it’s made to look more healthful than other sugary beverages, but it’s not – it’s still just a soft drink. It has this aura of healthfulness that is not deserved. Adding vitamins and minerals to junk food doesn’t make it healthy. Margo G. Wootan, Director of Nutrition Policy at the Center for Science in the Public Interest.
Rather than buy ‘expensive colored water’ create your own at home. Know and trust what you are drinking.
ONE BETTER CHOICE with the same idea: Melaleuca’s “Sustain” – Performance hydration drink that contains electrolytes. Flavors: Raspberry Lemonade, Lemon Blast, Ruby Red Grapefruit (my favorite!) 30 calories with no artificial ingredients/colors/dyes
The other ways water plays a critical role is in the following: body detox, energy levels, mental clarity, circulation, metabolism, body temperature, aids weight loss, brain function, joint function, kidney function, mood improvements and digestion just to name a few.
